ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department started in 1994 offering a Craft Course in Garment Making. In January 1997, a one-year Diploma Course in Clothing Technology was introduced from KTTC and later in January 1998, a 3-year course was introduced of the same. In 1999, Food & Beverage Production and Service Course was introduced as a one-year part time Certificate course which was examined internally.

Later in May 2002, a two-year Craft course in Food & Beverage Production and Service was introduced of which the first pioneer class sat for KNEC Exam in June/July 2004. In January 2004, a three year Diploma Course in Food & Beverage Management was introduced and the pioneer class sat for their KNEC Examination in October/November 2006.

In January 2013, the Department started offering Modular courses in Food & Beverage at both Diploma and Certificate level. TEP programme is gradually being phased out to Modular programs which are geared towards Competence Based Education Training (CBET) by KNEC. The first modular group sat for KNEC Examination in October/November 2013.

The Department started operating with one kitchen and one restaurant. But today, there are two kitchens and two restaurants. The Department opened its doors with 3 qualified lecturers but currently, it has a total of 20 qualified lecturers.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT PLANS FOR THE DEPARTMENT

The Department wishes to start other hospitality related courses such as;

  • Food & Beverage Management Catering & Accommodation
  • Catering, Housekeeping & Accommodation

For development plans, the Department looks forward to having 3 modern and well equipped training workshops i.e. 3 Kitchens and 3 Restaurants. This is due to the demand towards the course which has led to increase in students enrolment.
